British Energy to Solicit Bids On New Nuclear Plants.

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- British Energy Group Plc, the country's largest power generator, plans to solicit proposals for the construction of new nuclear power plants in the U.K.

The move may signal the start of a race among other power producers, including E.ON AG, RWE AG and Electricite de France SA, to replace aged power stations with more efficient ones that emit less carbon dioxide. Britain's government is preparing an energy bill that it hopes will help secure supplies and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

``British Energy invites proposals for new nuclear generation,'' a headline on the homepage of British Energy's Web site said at about 8 a.m. London time today...

...Nuclear energy has seen renewed interest from European countries because it produces electricity with little carbon dioxide. France and Finland are building new nuclear power stations, and Lithuania said last week it was tendering for the construction of a new nuclear reactor.

`Strong Contenders'

``All of our existing sites are strong contenders for new nuclear build,'' British Energy, which is about two-thirds owned by the government, said in an e-mailed statement.

British Energy's existing nuclear sites benefit from advantages such as existing links with the electricity grid and a good relationship with local communities, the company said in the statement. ``These benefits are recognized by all the major players who might wish to get involved,'' it said...

The good relations with local communities probably result from the fact that there are no people at all in these communities, all of them having been killed by things like the leaky pipe at Sellafield which led to their irradiation and deaths.

1. It's Dick Cheney's fault
Not sure how, yet, but I'm sure somebody will prove it.

2. This is why I have changed my position on ethanol from neutral to rabid
opposition.

Dick Cheney is for ethanol and he had his puppy announce it in the State of the Union address a few days ago.

I am also opposing solar thermal energy. Here's why:

6. Damn ... another missed opportunity ...
... if they'd only tilted the mirror array *that* much in
*that* direction then so many of the world's problems would
have been instantly solved by solar power ...

Don't know why you snipped this part out - I looked at www.british-energy.com - the headline is gone too.
From the article you partially quoted in the OP:

``British Energy invites proposals for new nuclear generation,'' a headline on the homepage of British Energy's Web site said at about 8 a.m. London time today. The headline provided a link to the main news page of the Web site. The link didn't connect to additional information on the subject and it was subsequently removed from the site.
