UN chief warns on climate change (BBC) {as dangerous as war}

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has warned that climate change poses as much of a danger to the world as war.

In his first address on the issue, Mr Ban said changes in the environment were likely to become a major driver of future war and conflicts.

He urged the US - the world's biggest producer of greenhouse gases - to take the lead in fighting global warming.

Mr Ban said he would focus on the issue in talks with leaders of the G8 group of industrialised nations in June.

1. I did a science fair project on pollution way back in jr high (1971).

CO2 wasn't even one of the pollutants everyone was worried about back then. Not even on the radar.

We tackled the others, and have made real progress. But the most dangerous one we didn't even notice until it was too late. I think we have passed a tipping point.

Oh well, doesn't mean we get a pass on mitigation. Time to get to work on ensuring our grandchildren will be able to survive.

2. Back in 1971 we still had lots of South American Rain Forests and

not nearly as much paved over for multi-acre parking lots. The acreage of our own forests was much larger then also.
