Kyoto Snub a Tool For China (US and Austrialia refusal to ratifiy used as excuse by China for pollu)
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21350078-2702,00.html

CHINA is using Australia's refusal to ratify the Kyoto agreement as diplomatic leverage as it faces increasing pressure to step up efforts to tackle climate change, Kevin Rudd has warned.
Using a breakfast speech to The Global Foundation's Australia Unlimited Roundtable to set out his vision for the future of Australia, the Opposition Leader made no bones about his view of the importance of China, and this country's dependence on its booming economy.

"Something very big, very big indeed is happening on our doorstep. It's happening on the world's doorstep and it's called the rise of China," he told the conference in Melbourne's Town Hall.

{snip}

In conversations I've had, Chinese ministers have used the United States and Australia's non-participation in Kyoto as a diplomatic tool to ask why they should be under pressure to act," Mr Rudd said.

"We need to convince the United States to commit to making greater progress and ensure China is also part of the solution."

2. I'm going to step out here and say that China needs to be part of the system
They're not using their energy to benefit the people, they're using it to make crap for Americans, and if they have to upgrade American consumers should pay for it through higher costs for goods.

But China needs 100 coal plants a year. This makes anything Americans do to conserve energy here into a total joke. It also hurts American manufacturing.

I posted the NOX graphic that was up here a few days ago on the wall of my cube at work, and all day people were looking at it and going "HOLY SHIT! LOOKIT CHINA!"

How long will it be before buying crap made in China is tantamount to supporting the apartheid government of South Africa? People are dying over there already, and there will be more deaths until business gets its crap together. The government certainly doesn't care. :shrug:

3. For the human rights issues alone there should be a boycott on Chinese products. Add in pollution
it's effects on them and the rest of the world proves that the 100 mile diet should apply to more than food.
