EU greens urge sanctions to enforce carbon targets

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - European Union member states that fail to meet
binding targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions should be punished to make
the pact agreed last week work, a senior EU lawmaker said on Tuesday.

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-leader of the European Parliament's Green Party, said no
sanctions were foreseen in the deal.

"If we agree on certain strategies then we have to be aware of what needs
to be done. If there are no sanctions then how can it work?" Cohn-Bendit told
reporters.

He urged the EU's executive body, the European Commission, to arm itself
with sanctions like those it has adopted in enforcing the bloc's budget rules
in the euro zone.
