Survey: Climate Change Seen As Threat (but not in US)
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nat-gen/2007/mar/14/031407171.html

CHICAGO (AP) - A survey on climate change conducted in more than a dozen countries found that a majority of people in nations including South Korea, Australia, Iran and Mexico - but not the United States - view global warming as a critical threat.

In the U.S., about 46 percent of those questioned said global warming is critical, while four in 10 labeled it "an important but not critical threat," in the survey conducted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and WorldPublicOpinion.org, in cooperation with other polling organizations.

Among the other countries where the question was asked, the Ukraine was the only nation where less than four in 10 participants found global warming to be a critical threat. There, it was 33 percent.

The polling was conducted last year, with field periods varying from June to December. More than 20,000 people were polled. The margin of error ranged between 3 and 4 percent.

2. Headline is wrong
46% see it as a "critical" threat. Another 39% (i.e. "four in 10") see it as an "important" threat.

85% see it as either a critical or an important threat. (Always look for the original data.)

3. climate change is but one aspect of the environmental crisis facing the planet . . .
which also includes (among other things) . . .

"overpopulation, destruction of the ozone layer, global warming, extinction of species, loss of genetic diversity, acid rain, nuclear contamination, tropical deforestation, the elimination of climax forests, wetland destruction, soil erosion, desertification, floods, famine, the despoliation of lakes, streams, and rivers, the drawing down and contamination of ground water, the pollution of coastal waters and estuaries, the destruction of coral reefs, oil spills, overfishing, expanding landfills, toxic wastes, the poisonous effects of insecticides and herbicides, exposure to hazards on the job, urban congestion, and the depletion of nonrenewable resources."
