Tenn. mine enriched Gore, scarred land
No major pollution violations, but threat remains

By BILL THEOBALD
Tennessean Washington Bureau

CARTHAGE, Tenn. - Al Gore has profited from zinc mining that has released millions of pounds of potentially toxic substances near his farmstead, but there is no evidence the mine has caused serious damage to the environment in the area or threatened the health of his neighbors.

Two massive white mountains of leftover rock waste are evidence of three decades of mining that earned Gore more than $500,000 in royalty payments for the mineral rights to his property.

Finely crushed limestone creates a moon-like landscape in the hills of Carthage, Tenn., at the site of a zinc mine near the home of Al Gore. Mineral rights to the Gore property were leased to the company that owns the mine. (BILLY KINGSLEY/THE TENNESSEAN)

Clinton's penis fault.

7. Uh oh. Maybe we should back someone who is perfect -- like Bush????? LOL
So Gore, a Democrat, invests in the economy like the Republicans do and thereby risks doing environmental damage. Eating and defecating also risk doing environmental damage. It's all a matter of the measure -- of balancing the damage with the healing. And Gore is way ahead of his Republican critics on that count. Saving the environment does not mean shutting down every mine and factory. It means mining and running factories in better ways.

If the ideology behind the propaganda slams about Gore's energy bill and now this mining lease is that behind every fortune is a crime or at least hypocrisy, isn't that an admission that all these wealthy Republicans are criminals and hypocrites.

I believe Gore is not anti-capitalism. He is pro-environment. He wants new technologies and investment in solutions to pollution, not simply a shut-down of human technologies. What idiots these right-wingers are. They can't understand the simplest of concepts. It's about innovation to survive guys.

11. The article is an obvious hit piece
The most objective statement I could find:

Gore has yet to be approached by the new owner, Strategic Resource Acquisition, said his spokeswoman Kalee Kreider, and he and wife, Tipper, have not decided whether they will renew their lease. It was terminated when the mine closed in 2003.

Last week, Gore sent a letter asking the company to work with Earthworks, a national environmental group, to make sure the operation doesn’t damage the environment.
