U.S. refiners seek to be heard on energy policy

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - With a Democratic-controlled Congress
putting their industry in its legislative cross-hairs, U.S.
refiners gathering in San Antonio for their annual meeting said
on Sunday they have to make sure their point of view is heard
on energy policy.

"At the end of the day, they have a point of view," National
Petrochemical & Refiners Association Chairman Jim Mahoney said
of the new Congress.

Mahoney said the association advocates a "market-based" approach
to solving the problems of energy supply and environmental
protection.

With energy giant BP Plc. bracing to receive on Tuesday the final
U.S. government report on the deadly 2005 explosion at its Texas
refinery, Mahoney said NPRA would work with the American Petroleum
Institute and the American Chemical Council to find lessons for
refiners and chemical manufacturers from the tragedy.
