Traces of flame retardant found in falcon eggs in Maine, N.H.

Maine environmental organizations are citing recent research on peregrine falcons from New England in their campaigns to ban a type of chemical flame retardant found in many household products.

In the first research of its kind in the U.S., a California researcher tested eight unhatched peregrine falcon eggs from New Hampshire and Maine for the presence of Deca, a flame retardant coming under increasing scrutiny in the state.

The eight eggs — seven from New Hampshire and one from Verona Island, Maine — contained levels of Deca that were, on average, more than eight times higher than levels found in peregrine falcon eggs in Sweden.

The levels were the highest ever recorded in bird eggs, although a very limited amount of research on Deca in birds has been conducted to date.

5. Read the Oct 06 issue of national geographic...
Anyone who flies any amount will have a level of flame retardant in their system. The more you fly, the more in your system.

The writer of the article had a test done to determine the amount of pollutants in his body. He had 300 times the acceptable level. Why? because due to his job as a journalist for National Geographic, he had to fly more that 20,000 miles yearly for various assignments.

If you were born prior to 1978, you will also have levels of DDT in your system. It will degrade overtime to become DDE. That's how it's detected.

If you live near the coast of the U.S. and eat a lot of fish, you will have higher than normal levels of mercury in your system. San Francisco is the worst. Why? because of the tilings run off from the gold rush in the 1840's. Mercury is used to separated the gold out from the raw ore and over time it flowed down the rivers into the bay and left a nice legacy for future generations.

The list goes on and on, but I think you get the picture.
