American Municipal Power-Ohio (AMP-Ohio) acquired licenses for two proposed hydroelectric facilities on the Ohio River.

The Smithland locks and dam are on the Ohio River between Illinois and Kentucky near Smithland, Ky., and the Cannelton locks and dam are on the Ohio between Indiana and Kentucky near Cannelton, Ind.

The Smithland hydroelectric facility is projected to be a 72-megawatt plant generating an average of 340,000 megawatt-hours annually.

The Cannelton plant is slightly larger: 84 megawatts and 390,000 average megawatt-hours.

1. Glad to hear it
When these dams were constructed, I wondered why hydroelectric power plants weren't put in place at the same time. King Coal must be losing its clout; it sure as hell doesn't have any appeal to the local population. Air quality in the lower Ohio Valley has deteriorated as a result of coal-fired power plants. Ozone alerts in the summer are becoming increasingly commonplace.
