The scientists stressed that Canada must adjust its climate-change policies to cope with some of the inevitable damage to nature and infrastructure that will strike in the future, as noted in a major UN report on global warming that was released last week.
“It has been a largely neglected option,” said Dr. Gordon McBean, chairman of the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences. “I guess we could be optimistic and hope
might be in the forthcoming package.”
Environment Minister John Baird last week questioned the need for more research and studies, arguing the first priority should be to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions which are linked to global warming. However, the scientists said more research is needed to identify the best ways to adapt to irreversible warming trends that are expected to cause rising sea levels, extreme weather, droughts and a bundle of health and infrastructure problems, costing billions of dollars in damage.
