United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon said on Friday he would convene a high level meeting on September 24 in New York to plan the next steps in climate change negotiations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Group of Eight wealthy nations summit in Heiligendamm, northern Germany, he said the meeting, would "lay the groundwork" for the UN climate change conference in Bali, Indonesia, in December.
Up to a hundred heads of state were likely to attend the meeting, taking place a day before the opening of the annual general assembly meeting, UN officials said.
Mr Ban welcomed the G8 agreement on Thursday on climate change, but said "political will" was now needed. There is a danger that the "momentum created by the meeting would be lost too easily" unless "concrete actions were taken by G8 countries to "cut
emissions".
