Japanese court denies latest suit over warfare unit

A Tokyo court yesterday rejected a compensation suit from Chinese victims of Japan's notorious World War II germ-warfare unit.

The High Court decision is the latest in a long line of similar rulings but comes amid a row between the two nations over their wartime history.

The judge acknowledged that the Japanese imperial military had engaged in germ warfare, said a lawyer for the plaintiffs, Jun Ogino.

BEIJING, July 20 (Reuters) - China criticised a Japanese court
rejection of demands by Chinese plaintiffs for germ warfare
compensation on Wednesday, allowing no let-up in tension between the
neighbours over territory, regional influence and history.

"The Japanese government must take an honest attitude and bear due
responsibility, earnestly deal with the reasonable demands of the
victims and properly handle this issue," the Chinese Foreign Ministry
said in a statement.
