Nepal's journalists brace for renewed crackdown

Several newspapers in Nepal recently dared to criticize the iron-fisted King Gyanendra and escaped immediate punishment, but a renewed crackdown on media may be imminent, a top Nepalese journalist warned.
"When you look at some recent headlines in Katmandu, you might think it's like before February" when the king dismissed the government and seized absolute power, Kunda Dixit, the founding editor of the Katmandu-based, English-language Nepali Times, said on Wednesday.

"But it would be an illusion," he added, describing a widespread fear that the king would soon turn a set of emergency measures into a lasting law, making it illegal and punishable to criticize the royal government or question its decisions.
