'G-4,' African Union reach basic accord on UNSC expansion plan
Compiled from AP, Kyodo
LONDON -- The "Group of Four" reached a basic agreement Monday with
the African Union during a meeting to iron out differences over U.N.
Security Council expansion in a bid to come up with a single
resolution, Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura said.
Machimura said the G-4 nations -- Japan, Brazil, Germany and India --
would go along with the African Union proposal to expand the number
of new nonpermanent members by five instead of the four sought by the
G-4.
It was not clear if all members of the 53-state African group would
agree to team up with the G-4 to produce a single resolution on
enlarging the Security Council, Machimura said.
