The Guardian - Give up, wife urges Karadzic
Ian Traynor in Zagreb
Friday July 29, 2005
The Guardian

The wife of Europe's most wanted man, the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, yesterday for the first time called on him to surrender to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

Ljiljana Karadzic, an influential figure among the Bosnian Serb mafias that orchestrated the 1992-95 war, has consistently defended her husband, who is wanted on charges of genocide, repeatedly voiced contempt for his detractors and pledged defiance of the tribunal.

But she told the Associated Press that the Karadzic family had had enough and he should surrender. "Our family is under constant pressure from all over. Our life and existence is jeopardised," she said at her home in the hardline Serbian village of Pale outside Sarajevo.

The Karadzic clan has been under intense international pressure for years, while the Nato and EU security forces in Bosnia have been pilloried for failing to seize Karadzic after 10 years on the run.
