KITA-KYUSHU-The warning from the gangsters in April 2002 came in the form of excrement scattered around a nightclub in Kokura-Kita Ward.
It wasn't exactly a severed horse's head placed in a bed beside a sleeping enemy, but the message was clear: Pay up.

But the shameless shakedown went down the drain. Employees at the establishment, Club Borudo, continued to refuse the yakuza demands for ``protection money.''

About a year later, a manager at the club was stabbed. Acts of violence against others opposed to organized crime also surfaced around the city.
