Zimbabwe's only independent daily newspaper was not on the streets of the capital Harare on Saturday, a day after police shut down the paper for operating illegally.
Police raided the Daily News offices late on Friday, ordered staff members out of the building and stopped work on the Saturday edition.
"It's a sad day for media freedom in this country," said editor-in-chief Francis Mdlongwa.
But he added: "We owe it to the reading public in Zimbabwe to ensure we get back on the streets as soon as possible."
'It's banned'
The paper's Sunday edition, The Daily News on Sunday, will also have to temporarily stop publishing.
