Two men left an Odessa bank with the money, but it’s what they left behind that concerned authorities at the scene late Wednesday evening.

Armed with a threatening device, the robbers entered the Chase Bank in the 1600 block of West County Road and demanded cash about 2:50 p.m.

The duo dumped the alarming object inside the bank and escaped in a four-door Cadillac with an undisclosed amount, Odessa Police Cpl. Sherrie Carruth said at the crime scene. No one was injured and the suspects were not armed beyond the device.

The Cadillac was later recovered in the 3700 bock of West Eighth Street, but the men were still free late Wednesday night.

he city’s bomb unit used its recently purchased robot to approach the building at 4:40 p.m. The machine entered the building, secured the suspects’ abandoned object at 5:40 p.m. and transported it to a protected trailer supplied by Midland Police.

The object, although not detailed by authorities, was legitimate enough in its appearance to induce extreme police caution.
“The device, whether it was real or fake, it was pretty good looking,” FBI agent Bill Vanderland said.
