Bomb squad investigates suspicious device in SE PDX
01:34 PM PST on Wednesday, February 21, 2007

By TERESA BELL, kgw.com Staff

A police bomb squad investigating a suspicious device found in Southeast Portland just before noon Wednesday determined it was nothing serious.

Part of SE Hawthorne Blvd. was blocked off during the investigation.

Sgt. Brian Schmautz with the Portland Police Bureau said a homeless man left a briefcase at 1335 NE Hawthorne and said there was a bomb in it, then ran off.

Police used a specialized robot to get in close enough to safely investigate. A short time later, police said the briefcase contained nothing dangerous.
