Employee ill as cops investigate suspicious package delivered to Canadian Embassy in Paris

PARIS — A Canadian Embassy employee fell ill today shortly after a suspicious package arrived in the mail, police said, adding that officers were investigating whether the two events were linked.

Paris' police headquarters said officials were investigating whether the package might have contained harmful radioactive, biological or chemical materials.

The avenue where the embassy is located was closed off to traffic, and onlookers were kept at a distance behind a police line. Men in white protective jumpsuits and gas masks went in and out of the building.

The embassy did not answer telephone calls, and France's Interior Ministry declined to comment.
