LOS ANGELES -- Narbonne High School in Harbor City was evacuated for about three hours Wednesday when someone called in a bomb threat to the campus and an unattended backpack was found in the area, authorities said.
The evacuation began about 10 a.m., when a male caller claimed there were bombs at "multiple locations" around the campus at 24300 Western Ave., said Nadia Gonzalez of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
A bomb squad searched the area and found the unattended backpack, but found no explosives, Gonzalez said. Students were evacuated to an athletic field.
Early Wednesday afternoon, a hazardous-materials team was investigating a report of a "smell of sulfur" near where the backpack was discovered, Gonzalez said. Around 1 p.m., haz-mat crews determined there was no danger and students were allowed to return.
