NEWPORT NEWS -- A suspicious package outside a home across from Warwick High School led authorities to evacuate several other homes in the area Wednesday evening.
Firefighters and police responded about 6:20 p.m. to Copeland Lane after a homeowner reported a suspicious package on a step on the backside of his house, Battalion Chief J.D. Carper said.
Authorities evacuated homes within 1,000 feet of the package, which affected houses on Gatewood Road, Hitchens Lane and Copeland Lane.
Bomb technicians investigated and did not find any explosives in the box, said Dana Perry, a fire department spokeswoman.
The scene was cleared after 11/2 hours.
