Salem, N.H., explosion destroys car, damages homes
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 08:45 AM by IanDB1
WHDH mis-reported the explosion as taking place in Salem, Mass instead of Salem, NH.

They also claimed the explosion was caused by a grenade.

Looks like it was a plumber's acetylene tank.

WHDH-- YOUR BAD!

"The talking lizard says this isn't covered on your insurance."

Salem, N.H., explosion destroys car, damages homes

SALEM | A man using a wireless remote to pop the trunk of his car triggered an acetylene gas explosion yesterday, injuring himself, destroying his car, damaging two house trailers and scattering debris across the neighborhood.

Craig Feetham, 39, was hurt when an electrical charge from the remote ignited acetylene gas that had leaked from a tank in the trunk of his 2003 Ford Taurus, Fire Marshal Jeff Emanuelson said.

"He thought that he might have smelled something when he went out (to his car), and when he popped the trunk to check it, it exploded," said Monica Marchioni, 38, Feetham's cousin.

The explosion at 6:13 a.m. woke Marchioni from a sound sleep at her home a mile and a half away from her cousin's trailer home on Brookwood Drive, off Route 28 near Main Street.

But Marchioni said she didn't realize her cousin had been hurt until she saw the damage on the morning news and drove over to see if he was OK.

Emanuelson said the coil in trunk opening mechanisms can give off a small electrical charge when activated, which is why car owners are advised not to store combustible materials in their trunks.

"Anytime you make an electrical connection, there is an arc," he said. "That arc was enough to ignite the gas that had accumulated in the trunk."

Acetylene is a combustible gas used in welding.

After three hours of treatment at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass., Feetham returned home with a bandaged right hand and cuts on his face, and got his first real look at the damage.

"When I came back and saw it, I couldn't believe I survived it," he said. "It looks like a car bomb you see over in Afghanistan."

The rest of the afternoon, family and friends helped Feetham clear what was left of the 2003 Ford Taurus while boarding up windows that had been blown out.

"Do you think I should call Triple A?" Feetham joked while pointing out a sticker left on a piece of metal debris in his driveway.
