The common face of hijacking in South Africa might be a young, gun-toting black man. But the reality is that the high-powered puppet-masters behind them are mostly white or Indian.

This revelation - long suspected in many quarters - could change South Africans' perceptions about who the typical South African criminal really is, observers said this week.

Richard Brussow is an ex-police officer who has analysed hijacking syndicates and techniques for the South African Police Services (SAPS) for the past six years. He is also a partner in the National Hijack Prevention Academy, which runs anti-hijack courses.
