No, despite appearances, its not an April Fool's thing.
"The American people are not getting the full picture of what's happening here. They're not getting the full picture of the drop in murders, the establishment of security outposts throughout the city, the situation in Anbar province, the deployment of additional Iraqi brigades which are performing well, and other signs of progress having been made," said McCain, of Arizona."
Might as well say it. McCain has staked his political future on the surge and cannot now back down. As evidence for how things are getting better in Iraq: instead of helicoptering in from the airport (like most guests), they came in a convoy of military vehicles filled with heavily armed soldiers. These convoys travel at about 100 MPH. (not mentioned in the article).
"'The fact that the violence decreased in Baghdad, the terrorists went to the surrounding areas and these areas are breeding grounds for violence,' he
said. 'The terrorist elements are backed into a corner and we are going to continue to carry out these operations.'"
That's a laugh. Backed into a corner? More like playing "go round the mulberry bush" with the US troops as they have been doing for 3 years. If they could corner them, they would have prevented them from leaving Baghdad in the first place.
"'The effort to exert security in Iraq will take time," Fox said. "Our job will not be accomplished within days or weeks.'"
Here is the real point. Just wait until after the 11/2008 election to see the REAL results, cause it all takes time.
"Separately, Kurdish lawmakers struck back against criticism over the Iraqi government's decision to endorse plans to relocate thousands of Arabs who were moved to the northern city of Kirkuk as part of Saddam Hussein's campaign to force ethnic Kurds out of the oil-rich city, in an effort to undo one of the former dictator's most enduring and hated policies."
Meanwhile, the Kurds move forward to expel the Arabs from Kirkuk, threatening to fragment Iraq and simultaneously stirring up Turkey, which is never far from the possibility of a military intervention. Very stable stuff.
