Description:

An explosion of a transformer at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in suburban New York City has been reported.

The explosion has forced the shutdown of nuclear reactor number three.A fire is reported to have broken out about 11:30 a.m. local time and is thought to be the cause of the subsequent explosion.The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reports that no release of radioactive material has occurred.

The complex, in Buchanan, NY is about 25 miles north of Manhattan on the banks of the Hudson River.Once owned by Con Edison, the controversial nuclear plant is now owned and operated by Entergy Nuclear-Northeast. Indian Point provides power to the New York City metro-region.

1. Old news. A transformer blew up in the switch yard, not in the plant.

They shut down the reactor anyhow. This was a non-nuclear event and only an "unusual event" due to it being inside the controlled access area of Indian Point. If it had been outside the fence, it would not have been.
