Suspected bomb turns out to be tightly rolled newspaper

Friday morning, a suspicious package was instantly turned into shredded newsprint with a blast of high-pressure water fired from a bomb disposal robot.

The package, which for a time seemed to be a real threat, was discovered just before 7 a.m. outside of Thomas Welding and Machine, 1308 W. Eighth Ave.

John Rainey, manager of the company, told the Enterprise-Record he was doing his regular morning rounds, picking up the newspapers in front of his office when he found something that seemed out of place.

He said the item appeared to be a tightly rolled Sacramento newspaper that was held together by a mass of rubber bands and had a handwritten message scrawled on it.

"It's either something or it is something really made to look like something," said Dye.

While not wanting to reveal specifically what the message on the rolled newspaper was, Dye said it amounted to a "weird" love letter. She also said the name in the message did not correspond to any current or former workers at Thomas.


If Rupert Murdoch can't buy a newspaper, he vows to send his army of robots house-to-house to blow them up.
