Latest in string of suspicious packages found behind court in Stamford, CT

STAMFORD — The fourth suspicious package found in the city since mid-April elicited the attention of the city's bomb squad and closed Stamford Superior Court for three hours Monday.

The package, which Public Information Officer Lt. Sean Cooney described as similar to a "travel shaving kit" was reported when a judicial marshal discovered it behind the courthouse near the parking garage at about 8:30 a.m..

A bomb squad investigation determined the package to be harmless, Cooney said.

Although Cooney said the series of suspicious packages recently recovered in Stamford is out of the ordinary, he said he does not believe the incidents to be connected.

1. Testing, One, Two, Three...perhaps?
A suitcase found between two cars in the Grade A parking lot on April 21 and an unattended shopping bag recovered at the Metro-North station both triggered responses, and were both found to be harmless, Cooney said.

Three cinder blocks wrapped in an unusual fabric were found the Stamford Town Center construction site early April 27, prompting numerous traffic snarls, a delayed mall opening, and the deployment of the city's bomb squad before the bundles were found to be harmless.

Cooney has said he believed someone placed the packages in that fashion deliberately.

Police reviewed surveillance tapes but have not discovered who placed the blocks, Cooney said.
