Suspicious Envelope at DSM Library
Des Moines police are investigating a suspicious envelope that was placed on top of some shotgun shells on a picnic table in downtown Des Moines today.
The city's bomb squad, K-9 unit and haz-mat team were called out to the scene between Starbucks and the Des Moines Public Library. Police evacuated and shutdown the immediate area, including several blocks of Locust Street.
Police Sergeant Todd Dykstra says the shotgun shells were empty and the envelop contained a suspicious material. Dykstra says the material was not hazardous, but he declined to give specifics. Dykstra also says there was writing on the outside of the envelope, but that information isn't being released.
Investigators are now trying to find witnesses. The area was reopened around 12.30 p.m.
