THE HAGUE (AFP) - The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on
Tuesday announced an investigation into war crimes, namely rapes, in the
Central African Republic in 2002 and 2003 without naming any suspects.
The alleged crimes include sexual violence, rapes and killings committed
during a conflict between the regime of former president Ange-Felix
Patasse and rebel forces after a failed coup plotted by current CAR
president Francois Bozize in October 2002.
"Sexual violence appears to have been a central feature of the conflict,"
the prosecution said.

court, in December 2004 after the CAR's supreme court said the country
lacked the capacity to prosecute such cases.
