The Enquirer

Battle Creek police have closed off Poplar Street between N.E. Capital Avenue and Clay Street after a resident found a suspicious package on his porch.

Sgt. Carter Bright said the incident was reported at 9:51 a.m. when the resident at 15 Poplar Street woke up and found a foot-long package wrapped in paper but without an address on his porch.

Police said the resident had had an earlier dispute with a neighboring resident. Battle Creek bomb squad was being called in to investigate.

Look for the complete story Friday in the Battle Creek Enquirer and online at battlecreekenquirer.com.

3. Breaking Update!
Man, is Gramma going to be pissed when she finds out that they blew up that poster her grandson had so admired during his last visit.

Wonder what was in it, or what the guy may have forgotten he'd ordered.

Bomb scare turns out benign
>snip
Dressed in protective suits, bomb squad officers used a remote-controlled robot to pick up the package. They took it from the house to a gun range on River Road, where they removed the package from a special trailer used to transport it.

Sgt. Marc Pierce, bomb squad supervisor, said officers found the package was addressed to the resident and had been sent through the mail. It apparently came from Tampa, Fla.

>snip

When officers removed the package from the bomb trailer at the range and saw that it had been mailed, Pierce said Prough was contacted again.

"He still didn't know who would have sent it, and he wasn't expecting anything and was still paranoid."

The package was destroyed and only a few tiny pieces of paper were left. Pierce said he couldn't determine what was inside, but it did not appear to be a threat.

4. reminds me of that episode of WKRP in Cincinnati
Johnny examines a brown mail package on Les's desk. "Battle Creek, Les?" He'd sent in cereal box tops for a toy snooping/spying kit.
