GREENSBORO — Officials locked down the Lorillard Tobacco Co. plant on East Market Street on Thursday afternoon after the discovery of a suspicious package.
Two firemen in Hazmat gear entered the building shortly after 5 p.m. to test the package, which fire officials said contained an unidentified powder. The firemen emerged nearly two hours later after determining the powder was not harmful.
"It may be a hoax, but obviously someone has overstepped the boundaries," Police Lt. T.L. Callicutt said. "We're going to investigate and hopefully find the person who did this."
The package was addressed to an employee and arrived through the U.S. mail, police said.
The powder contained inside the package worried employees enough to call police about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Fire officials were brought in a short time later, and the building at 2525 E. Market St. was locked down.
