NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Public Library says a suspicious package at its midtown branch turned out to be a bag of discarded clothing.

An NYPD spokesman, Detective John Burthorn, says police cordoned off the area after they were notified at around 1:55 p.m. that the package had been discovered.

The library is located at 455 Fifth Avenue, across the street from the main New York Public Library.

A library spokeswoman, Gayle Snible, says there was never an evacuation because police didn't think one was needed. But access was temporarily restricted for people trying to get into the library.
