LATEST CHARLESTON -- The Charleston Area Hazardous Materials Team was called to the Eastern Illinois University campus around 11 a.m. today on a report of a suspicious package.
According to Pat Goodwin, Charleston’s assistant chief of fire and rescue, the university’s mail room received a suspicious package from northern Illinois. As of 1:30 p.m., the package was still sealed.
“We are taking all precautionary tests to evaluate it,” Goodwin said.
Goodwin said the team was waiting on the Secretary of State Police bomb squad to X-ray the package before taking further action.
