Suspicious package closes down part of campus
Unattended item found at LDS center forces scores of students out of dorms late Friday night
Students living in UCC and Tonopah South residence halls were evacuated late Friday night after a suspicious package was found at the LDS Institute of Religion Student Center.
Shortly before 10 p.m. a custodian discovered an unattended suitcase leaned against one of the building’s doors. Police were then called and the surrounding dorms were evacuated at approximately 11:45.

Though the LDS center is located on campus, it is not technically UNLV property and is under the jurisdiction of metro. Because of this, UNLV Police played a supporting role, mainly assisting in the evacuation of the dorms.

“There have been evacuations on campus in the past. It is not a usual occurrence, however,” he said. “Most previous evacuations were due to fire alarms and/or natural gas leaks.”
