NORFOLK - A suspicious-looking package caused a Norfolk motel to be evacuated and traffic to be blocked Friday night.
Norfolk officials said the package initially appeared to be a bomb found in a laundry room at the Super 8 Motel on Shore Drive. The police fire bomb squad determined it was not an explosive device late Friday.
Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman, said the package was fashioned together with cellophane, wire and woods to give the appearance of a bomb.
Motel guests were evacuated and traffic lanes in both directions of the 7900 block of Shore Drive were closed from about 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Suspicious package found at a Norfolk hotel

A suspicious package forced people from two hotels and a nearby mobile home park.
Friday night, Norfolk police say a man found - what looked like - a real bomb in one of the hotel rooms.
Carl Imel and his son Ashley were clearing some bags out of room inside the Super 8 Motel on Shore Drive when they made an interesting discovery. They found a suit case resembling a bomb. "We put it on the cart and we put the brief case on there...then it popped and I'm like oh no we got a problem," explains Carl. That's when they decided to have police officers take a look at the package.

And that's when police prompted an evacuation, not only in the Super 8, but also in the Days Inn and a nearby mobile home park.
