SF: UPDATE: SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE AT FIRE STATION NOT A BOMB
08/28/07 6:20 PDT
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
A suspicious package that caused a fire station to be evacuated this morning has been deemed a package of interest by police, San Francisco Fire Lt. Ken Smith said.
The 11-member crew at Fire Station 8 returned from a call around 3:30 a.m. when they noticed an 8 by 11 package in their mailbox with funny writing on it, Smith said. The station, located at 36 Bluxome St. in the South of Market area, was evacuated, Smith said.
Police responded to the fire station and determined that the package was suspicious. When bomb squads arrived and scanned the package it was found not to contain a bomb, but it is a "package of interest'' that police will investigate, Smith said.

The package was not directed towards the station in anyway, Smith said.
