Arroyo appoints officials snarled in controversy - Philippines

Two former Philippine security chiefs returned to the government and military in key positions yesterday, weeks after they resigned in the wake of a failed mutiny by troops who accused them of corruption.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's spokesman, Ignacio Bunye, said former defense secretary Angelo Reyes had been appointed to the newly created cabinet position of counter-terrorism ambassador.

Head of the armed forces Narciso Abaya told Reuters the former head of Philippine military intelligence, Victor Corpus, had been made the armed forces' head of civil relations.

The appointments come ahead of elections next May in which Arroyo is expected to stand, despite having pledged not to.
