Homemade explosive devices found on Mass. beach
SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (AP) A woman walking on a beach in Swampscott found two explosive devices that authorities say were powerful enough to kill a person.
Firefighter Robert Faulkner says the homemade objects, about the size of tennis balls, were wrapped in duct tape and had two-inch fuses. He says they contained what appeared to be gunpowder.
Faulkner says the woman who found the devices on Monday had placed them in a plastic bag in front of her home. On Wednesday, a friend suggested that she call police.
Officials evacuated nearby homes while the State Police bomb squad sent two robots in to remove the objects and deactivate them with a water cannon.
