Conakry - Nearly 4 500 people fleeing famine and violence in war-wracked Liberia have poured into southern Guinea in the past couple of weeks, a source close to Guinean security forces patrolling the border region told AFP on Thursday.
The refugees - 4 263 Liberians and 231 Ivorians - were picked up by Guinean security forces near the country's southern border and handed over to the UN refugee agency in the west African country, the source said.
In just four days last month, more than 1 700 people, mostly women and children, crossed from Liberia into Guinea near the southeastern towns of Fansakoni and Bossou, the source said.
