Iran Nobel winner gets hero's welcome

Thousands of people have greeted Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi in extraordinary scenes at Tehran's city airport on her return to the Iranian capital.

The human rights activist, who has already used her elevated profile to urge the Iranian Government to allow greater freedom of speech, called for political prisoners to be released as she stepped off the plane.

Iran's President Mohammad Khatami has urged Mrs Ebadi, the country's first Nobel Peace Prize winner, to use her award for the good of Iran and world peace.

He has also played down the significance of the award, saying it was "not very important" and was awarded on the basis of "totally political criteria".

More and more we're seeing evidence of just how deceptive Khatami has been and the emergence of stronger Secular forces inside the country. Mrs. Ebadi is a strong Secularist. Here the chanting of Pre-Revolutionary National Anthem is evidence of the true feelings of the people. Iran needs regime change from within.

"Young Iranians danced and led renditions of the pre-revolution national anthem as they waited for Ms Ebadi to emerge from the airport terminal. Women in the crowd wore white headscarves and carried white flowers, symbolising peace, in an event organised largely by word of mouth.

"This shows the world has heard our voices after 24 years of imprisonment," said Kefayat Kousha, 38, a school teacher. "People are hopeful again."
