Businessman released after ransom paid - China
Kidnappers in China have released a Taiwanese businessman after his family paid a ransom of US$1.68 million (NT$57 million), a police official and local media reported yesterday.

The businessman, identified only by his surname, Kuo, was kidnapped last Wednesday when he left a karaoke bar in Dongguan, a city in the southern province of Guangdong where many Taiwanese companies have businesses, police said.

"Based on what we've been told, the businessman is now safe, but we're still trying to make contact and understand the situation," said Chang Ching-yu, police chief in the central Taiwan city of Taichung.
