Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar's leading independent newspaper said on Wednesday that it faced closure after being ordered to pay 660-million shillings (about R4,5-million) in damages to the children of the island's president.
Dira, a weekly tabloid with the largest circulation of any newspaper on the semi-autonomous isles, was found guilty on Monday of publishing "false and malicious statements" about President Amani Karume's son and daughter, Abeid and Amina.
The paper had accused them of using their father's political influence to buy state-owned businesses.
