More than 500 members of three New Hampshire National Guard units got orders over the weekend that they will be mobilized next month in support of operations in Iraq.
The call-up is the largest mobilization of New Hampshire units since the end of World War II, Guard spokesmen said. <snip>
According to N.H. National Guard Adjutant Gen. John E. Blair, there are a total of 1,721 Army National Guardsmen in the state, so this deployment leaves slightly more than 1,000 behind; of about 980 total Air National Guardsmen, about 700 remain.
The 172nd has previously seen combat in the Civil War, World War I and WW II, and was mobilized for the Berlin crisis in 1961. The 197th participated in both World Wars and also saw combat in Vietnam in 1968. <snip>
