NY Times: New Prime Minister Is Steering Canada Cautiously to the Right
New Prime Minister Is Steering Canada Cautiously to the Right

TORONTO, Dec. 19 — As one of his first acts in office, Prime Minister Paul Martin fired Jean Chrétien's personal chef and replaced him and his Québécois provincial meat-and-potato fare with a Portuguese-born chef known for his elegant presentations of nouvelle cuisine.

In big ways and small, Mr. Martin's first week in office has been marked by symbolic shifts in style and policy. The trend in Ottawa is already more businesslike and conservative — friendlier to the United States and to the Canadian military.

Among his first moves was making several changes in government ethics rules, including a prohibition on cabinet members accepting travel on noncommercial charters and private jets, a source of several scandals in the Chrétien government.

At Mr. Martin's swearing-in ceremony on Dec. 12, a Native Canadian elder conducted a "cleansing ceremony" complete with burning sage as a sign that the government would change course, even though Mr. Martin has succeeded a fellow Liberal whom he served as finance minister.

4. As an American
who hopes to immigrate to Canada as the same-sex spouse of a Canadian citizen, we are watching his every move. Hopefully his election will not be a move backwards...

5. As a Canadian...
this is no secret....

his cabinet is filled with Western MP's which are seen more right leaning than Eastern Canadians...

of course... our right-wing is nothing like the American rightwing... more like the American democrat...

6. He sounds rather moderate
Hopefully some good economic policy will help Canada. Also, hopefully this will improve US Canadian relations without Canada becoming a lap dog. Gator I wish the two of you all possible happiness, if not here wherever your travels take you.
