More than 60 percent of Taiwan's people believe China's authorities are hostile to the country's government while over 40 percent consider the hostility targeted at Taiwan's population, the Mainland Affairs Council said yesterday after reviewing 80 polls conducted on cross-strait relations last year.
Since 1993, the MAC has routinely surveyed public opinion on relations with China. In the polls, including 76 conducted by local media organizations and research institutes and four conducted by the MAC itself, some 70 percent of respondents expressed their preference for Taiwan to maintain the status quo or officially declare independence. Less than 20 percent of those polled favored unification with China.
In addition, a vast majority of Taiwan's people, more than 70 percent, rejected the "one country, two systems" formula espoused by China to claim sovereignty over Taiwan while giving the island elements of self-rule.
