The 63-year-old mother of an Uzbek man, Muzafar Avazov, who was boiled to death by the Uzbek authorities, was today sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and hard labour. Fatima Mukhadirova had been charged with undermining the constitution of Uzbekistan for drawing the world’s attention to her son’s brutal murder in August 2002.
Fatima Mukhadirova’s son, Muzafar Avazov, was killed at the brutal Jaslik colony, known locally as the “place of no return”, for his membership of Hizb ut-Tahrir, a well known non-violent Islamic political party. Human rights groups said that the body of Muzafar Avazov, a 35-year-old father of four, showed signs of burns on the legs, buttocks, lower back and arms. There was a large, bloody wound on the back of his head, heavy bruising to his forehead and neck and his hands had no fingernails. ..
Dr Imran Waheed, a UK based doctor and Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, said, “Uzbekistan remains a close ally of Western governments and Fatima Mukhadirova is merely ‘collateral damage’ in the so-called ‘war on terror’. While the murderers of Muzafar have not been called to account, his elderly mother joins the tens of thousands of Muslims incarcerated in the dark and dingy prisons of Uzbekistan.”
