Death comes at dawn in Uganda

Each night the same harrowing nightmare returns to haunt Catherine Atala: the bloodied bodies of people she saw being slaughtered in a rebel attack rising and moving toward her.

Before they reach Atala, she wakes in a sweat, shaken and frightened. Then she prays, desperate to chase away the ghosts of a horrific rebel raid on a refugee camp in northern Uganda.

Like scores of other survivors of the February 22 attack on the Barlonyo camp in Lira district, the 65-year-old is finding it difficult to move forward.

More than 200 people were slaughtered by rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army, who shot people as they fled and burned others alive as they cowered in their huts.
