Man stabs Jewish teenager in anti-Semitic attack (Paris)
Sat., June 05, 2004

By Haaretz Service and The Associated Press

PARIS - French President Jacques Chirac condemned the stabbing Friday of a Jewish teenager in Paris. In a statement issued by his office, he said that tolerance was the basis for France's national unity.
A man reportedly crying "God is great" stabbed 17-year-old Yisrael Yifraha in the thorax on Friday, seriously injuring the victim, officials said.
<snip>
Young Muslims have been blamed for many of the attacks which, over the past few years, have coincided with rising tension in the Middle East.

However, Muslims have also been victims of racist attacks. In March, an arson fire damaged a mosque and destroyed a Muslim prayer hall in Annecy, in southeast France.

9. Too subtle.
Everything must be either condemned or condoned.
The notion that being the most aggressive kid on the
block is not a good way to lead a peaceful life requires
one to look ahead several steps. This kid is obviously
an innocent bystander in this incident, but that does not
buy you much these days; if you are in the way when someone
goes ballistic, it's just tough shit for you.

10. You didn't say that violence begets violence.
You said that if you live by the sword you die by the sword. How did this 17-year-old French boy live by the Israeli Likud's "sword?"

Did you have the same reaction when several American Muslims were killed for "revenge" after 9/11? Did you airily opine that "If you live by the sword you die by the sword?"

15. My information
According to my sources, no Muslims were murdered after the 9/11 attacks. One Indian Sikh wearing a turban was murdered by some ignoramus cowboy. While many received threats, that's the extent of the post 9/11 revenge killings.

The anti-Semitism expressed here is far different, you are right in that, 11cents. There is no possible revenge motive for a North African Muslim to kill a French Yeshiva student.

19. What's that got to do with what I posted?
The footnote is the only thing that seemed to relate to what I posted, so I'll ignore the rest....

As a footnote, Violet, you should probably have both mentioned that this list of names is of possibly hate-crime related killings but as yet unconfirmed

Who or what do they have to be confirmed by, Mike? The ADL? Does the same apply to all possible hate-crimes, or does it just apply to Arabs and Muslims? And why haven't they been confirmed or not yet? After all, they're not crimes that happened within the past year or anything...

Secondly, I do have to find it a bit odd that while you were quick to come up with a list of possible names, we have yet to hear your view on the stabbing in France.

Not odd at all. I saw someone make a comment that I thought seemed a bit weird given the virulent anti-Arab sentiment that engulfed the US after Sept 11, so I went and did a quick Google, and replied to the post that I disagreed with. So, care to explain just why you consider it odd?

Care to comment?

Nope, not really. If you'd read my posts at DU in the past, you'd be aware already of what I think about crimes such as these. Why? What do you think I should say?

22. Well, actually
It was your actual source that posted the disclaimer. Guess you didn't even bother to read your own source document since you wondered who they needed to be confirmed by. Or did it surprise you that somebody actually bothered to read the source to your excepted list rather than just take you at face value?

24. You guessed wrong then...
Care to point out where the source said who they needed to be confirmed by? I think I would have noticed that if it'd been there, but since yr so sure it's there, feel free to point it out to me. My question to you that you declined to answer still stands...

I'm not quite sure what point yr trying to make here. I certainly hope that it's not trying to make out that racially motivated attacks against Arabs or Muslims don't happen in the US. My purpose in posting it was to refute the original false claim that there hadn't been a single case of Arabs or Muslims being targetted by hate crimes. If you want to argue that, yr going to be flogging a bit of a dead horse, I suspect...

20. suggest you check your sources
"According to my sources, no Muslims were murdered after the 9/11 attacks" - is patently untrue - are you limiting this to one country btw? even if that's the case it's wrong.

And just because the guy you mentioned wasn't a Muslim does not mean it wasn't an anti-Muslim attack. If someone walks out of a synagouge who doesn't happen to be Jewish and is killed by someone shouting anti-semitic bile does that mean it wasn't an anti-semitic attack just because the nutbag got it wrong?

There is no justification for the attack on this teenager, but it doesn't prrove a pervasive anti-semitism in France or elsewhere in Europe either.

14. According to the news...
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 04:25 PM by Dilbertio
4 other people have been stabbed during the night in this very same town, including an algerian and a ghaneen. I guess we will have to wait for tomorrow to have more informations about it, since it is the sabbat...(however, the man shouted Allah Akhbar)

But the amount of reported anti-jewish assaults keep growing and growing, that's really really worrying.

And since I can't find any news about it on CNN or in this thread, Israël is seriously wounded, but he'll survive. I know that "anti-semitism" and the "palestinian conflict" are very important, and all, but at the end we end up forgetting about the people themselves.

My prayers are with Yisrael and his family. Did they catch the man who stabbed him?

21. It "looks" like they've catched him...
The day following the agression of the 67 years-old Marcel Cadou in the same town, Yacine Mrire, one of the victims, has recognized in the street the guy who attacked him a few days before. 32 years-old Eskander G. has been recognized by "several other victims", including two jewish students he had assaulted a few minutes after Israel had been stabbed.

25. Tragic
I'm glad the perpetrator has been captured. Murder is murder, and saying all Jews are to blame for Israel's crimes is like an echo of "they killed Jesus" blood-libel.

Murder doesn't stop being murder just because the IDF does it too.
