Mazen Dana, a 43-year-old Palestinian, had spent much of his professional life covering another flashpoint, his hometown of Hebron.
On the job, he was shot and beaten several times by Israeli troops, and acknowledged the risks of working in one of the most volatile areas of the West Bank.
Dana, a father of four, was shot and killed by US soldiers yesterday while videotaping near a US-run prison on the outskirts of Baghdad.
Overnight, the family laid out an American flag as a doormat, for visitors to step on to express their anger.
About 200 friends and colleagues marched through Hebron, holding photos of Dana and demanding that more be done to protect journalists.
Some held signs saying "Don't kill the truth" and "The occupations kill journalists in Iraq, Palestine".
